How to Report a Fake Google Review

To report a fake Google review, open the review in your Google Business Profile, select the three-dot menu, and choose "Report review", then pick the policy it breaks. Google removes reviews that violate its content policies, such as spam, fake engagement, conflict of interest or off-topic content. It does not remove a review just because you disagree with it or because it is negative but genuine.

Steps

  1. Find the review in your Business Profile and select "Report review" from the menu.
  2. Choose the policy it violates — for example spam, fake engagement or conflict of interest — rather than a generic option.
  3. Note the date you reported it and check the status in Google's review management tool.
  4. If it is rejected and you have clear evidence, appeal through Google Business Profile support.
  5. Post a calm, factual public reply meanwhile, stating that you cannot find a record of the interaction.
  6. Do not retaliate or ask others to mass-report; that can breach policy yourself.

What Google will and will not remove

Google's prohibited and restricted content policy covers spam and fake content, off-topic reviews, conflicts of interest (for example reviews from a competitor or former employee), and offensive or harassing language. Reviews that break these rules are eligible for removal.

A one-star review from a real customer about a real experience is not removable, even if it is unfair or exaggerated. In that case, the best response is a public reply.

How long does removal take?

Google does not publish a fixed timeline. Some reports are resolved within days and others take several weeks, so plan on replying publicly rather than waiting for the review to disappear.

Common mistakes

  • Reporting a genuine but unfair review, which is unlikely to be removed.
  • Leaving it unanswered while waiting for a removal that may never come.
  • Offering customers something in exchange for removing their review, which breaks Google policy.

Frequently asked questions

Can I delete a negative Google review myself?
No. Owners can only report a review and reply to it. Only the reviewer or Google can remove it.
Will Google remove a review that is just false?
Only if it violates a content policy. Google cannot verify most disputes about what happened, so a review that is merely inaccurate usually stays up.
What should I say in a public reply to a suspected fake review?
Stay factual and brief: say you cannot find a record of the visit and invite them to contact you directly. Avoid accusing the reviewer.
